Carpet Cleaning: Pet Stains 101

As wonderful as our pets may be, what isn’t wonderful are the stains they leave behind. Carpet cleaning pet stains can be a challenge in and of itself, with some methods and solutions working better than others. In this post, we will go in-depth into some of the best carpet cleaning methods to get rid of the toughest pet stains.

For New Stains

For those stains that are relatively new, i.e. the moment your dog or cat has an accident on the carpet, the most important thing to do to avoid the stain getting out of hand is to soak up as much as the urine or liquid as possible. To do this, make sure to use a thick layer of paper towels and apply directly onto the wet spot. Apply pressure to the paper towels on the liquid by pressing your foot on the paper towels directly. Do this for at least one minute. Keep repeating this with new paper towels until the spot is barely damp.

Then you want to take cold water mixed with a staining solution or just soap and apply directly to the damp spot. For tougher stains, we recommend using a solution of equal parts water and vinegar. Rinse this spot thoroughly before blotting dry with fresh paper towels.

For Older Strains

Older stains can be tougher to get out of the carpet, especially those coming from weeks or days of walking your dog in and out of your house. While there are benefits to walking your dog, none of those are the stains they tend to leave behind. Some of these stains may require the help of a local carpet cleaning surface or even replacing portions of the carpet if the stains have soaked through straight to the padding.

What tends to work best is using baking soda to your advantage. You want to soak the stained area with a solution of equal parts of cold water and vinegar. Then sprinkle the baking soda over the wet spot and brush it into the carpet fibers using a brush or your hands. Leave the baking soda overnight on the carpet or until it is completely dry. The moment you feel the baking soda is dry, run a vacuum cleaner over it and behold a newly cleaned carpet.

The Bottomline

Carpet cleaning pet stains is going to be a continuous battle from the moment you decide to own a pet. Sometimes, pets can’t help the accidents they have, but that doesn’t mean your home has to pay the price. Hopefully, these carpet cleaning solutions can help you keep up with keeping your carpet clean with as little effort as possible.
